Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors
Veterans Project:
About Us

We believe that doctors and lawyers should work together to help people reach their full potential and have safe, secure, and healthy lives.  Veterans can experience many barriers to good health and well-being, many of which can be tackled with legal advocacy. When veterans, lawyers, and doctors work together, we can help ensure that the men and women who served us are empowered to live their best, healthiest lives, on their own terms.

The Medical-Legal Partnership for Seniors Clinic (MLPS) is an innovative, award-winning legal clinic at UC Hastings College of the Law. The clinic partners law students and faculty with healthcare providers at UCSF and the San Francisco VA Medical Center to provide free legal advocacy to low-income older patients, with the goal of putting patients at the helm of their own care and reducing social barriers to health and well-being.
The MLPS - Veterans Project provides free services to patients at the San Francisco VA Medical Center Geriatric Clinic and Palliative Care Clinic.

Our Stories

Mr. S. was a senior veteran whose wife had recently passed away.  Due to her lost income, he didn’t have enough income to pay his basic bills and was at high risk of eviction and either homelessness or institutionalization.  MLPS worked with the veteran and his VAMC-based UCSF medical provider to apply for VA benefits and to negotiate with Mr. S’s landlord.  MLPS was able to help Mr. S. secure double the amount of monthly income he was receiving and Mr. S. was able to stay in his home of over 50 years.

Mrs. F. was a senior veteran who was recovering from a serious illness in the SFVAMC Hospital and who needed additional monetary support to help pay for temporary in-home care after she was discharged.  MLPS worked with the veteran to secure additional VA and state benefits to help provide that care.  In the process, MLPS discovered that a family member had engaged in egregious financial elder abuse, of which the veteran was unaware, during the time she was hospitalized with her illness.  MLPS assisted the veteran to quickly stop the financial abuse and worked with the veteran to find another legal service provider who helped her file a lawsuit against the perpetrator.

Mr. W. was a senior veteran who was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness.  He was very stressed because he wanted to make sure his long term partner was taken care of after he passed away.  His VA based UCSF provider recognized his stress and referred him to the MLPS-V Project.  MLPS was able to help Mr. W. finalize his legal planning documents, which greatly reduced Mr. W’s stress allowing him to better focus on the time he had left and focus on the legacy he wanted to leave behind.
